I am using Revit 2014 and I would like to create multiple sheet indexes- one for architecture, one for civil, one for mechanical etc...
I tried to start a new sheet list but it duplicates the original list which of course i can not edit. Any suggestions?

Sure - add a filter. Are your sheets numbered with prefixes like A, S, E...? Then just filter with sheet number starting with A.....etc.
If not, then add a sheet parameter that holds this information, add that to your schedule, filter it and hide that parameter in the schedule.
