Revit 2013

I am working on families in R2013 and have come across an issue new to me.  I have started using face based families in an attempt to simplify production.  The issue I am having is that my reference planes seem to ambigously extend, and I want to know how to control the extents.  When I try to dimension to a family the reference plane will extend beyond the family, which is not something that had happened when I was creating generic non hosted families.

I see that the reference planes have a "scope box" drop down, is that something I can use to trim the planes down?  Basically I only want the reference plane to show where the 3D model is, not beyond.  I hope this doesn't come off to confusing but if this is rediculously unclear I'll add a few screen captures.

Thanks, Andy

Have you tried playing with the 'Is Reference' properties of the reference plan ?

You may also want to try using reference 'lines' rather than 'planes'.

It seems to work to use lines instead, but it's not ideal, I like planes so I can dimension from any view and not have family geometry get in the way.  FYI attached is a screen capture of the issue.

How would you modify a family from face-based or hosted to one that is not?
