So i am a little bit familiar with Revit and family creating but I get hung up on what is the best way to do certain families. I am creating a centrifugal pump that has many components. should I model each piece individually and create a group? I don't know if it will be parametric if I do it that way. If I do it all as one component I think there might be too much going on for one family.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be very appreciated.

Start by downloading and reading the "families guide" from the autodesk site.  This may be an older publication but don't worry about that.  The approach is still the same.

If you have a lot of parts, they are best done in separate families.  Each of these parts can be parametric and controlled by the host.  Remember, you are building primarily a visual family so don't go overboard with the modeling.  If its hidden then don't model it.  Not all families are cuttable so there will be no way to see internal parts.  If the parts have to be scheduled, then the nested family has to be shared but it may still be just information and no 3D elements.
