I created a simple face-based family. I can place it on a roof fine when viewing in 3-D but when I'm in Plan view I get the "Cannot" cursor symbol (circle with line through it). As a workaround, I'm currently placing it in 3-D and then going to my roof plan to relocated it. I don't want to make the family roof-based b/c there are times I'd like to place in on other faces. It places fine on elevations, so it's not a simple 2-D vs. 3-D thing. Also, in plan view, I can place it on facades and other families, but it seems to struggle with horizontal faces?

Revit is looking for a hosting plane and a normal plan view's host is the level.  Set your work plane to the roof plane and now you should be able to place the family.

WW, many thanks for the quick response. Implementing your suggest I noticed in the ribbon that a "Modify / Place Component" tab was being appeared while placing with "Place on Vertical Face" highlighted. Hadn't noticed that before. I really should learn to look at the ribbon first when debugging. In any case, the other options were "Place on Face" and "Place on Work Plane". "Place on Face" did the job.

How would you modify a family from face-based or hosted to one that is not?
