Hey Guys, im a cabinet maker, Im trying to make the move from autocad to revit.  So far i got my standard cabinet flexing with 1 door on it.  I've set variables to control, W, H, D  toe kick height, and door gap spacing between cabinets / doors for front, btm, l/r. I've also applied a few base textures. But I would like to gather a bit more information before i move fwd.

1) I have a flat door on the cabinet, in the future, i would like to be able to change door style door based on customer needs, so lets say i got a project with 20 different cabinets style in this design, would i be able to change the door style in one shot or would i have to manually change it one cabinet at a time. If yes, can someone give me some direction or tutorial on that.

2)  door handles, i need to be able to change htem instantly too, i assume it would be a similar process to changing doors styles.

3) I took this cabinet and inserted it in a project, now i want to change one of the texture and i tried right click > edit family > change the color and, saved and load into project. pop up menu appears asking if i want to overrite the existing version and its parameters,  i click yes. but it doesnt update the texture? would it also be possible to change the texture of the door all in 1 shot?

1 and 2- You could use nested families in your cabinet family for the door and handles and use visability parameters to turn them off or on in the project. Just remember the more you you put into your family the bigger it is and that could hurt your project performance so you may want to try and break it down a bit or use a type catalog when inserting your family.

3- If you created a material you need to give it a unique name.  If the name of a material in your family is the same as a material in a project the family will take on the properties of the material in the project.

hey teafoe, thanks for the reply,

1-2)So your saying I would have to essentially preload all my doors and handles in each file and turn on and off which one i would like to see? there no way to create 20 seperate door files and linking 1 door to a cabinet? and what do u mean by using type catalog? like create a catalog of 20 cabinets for every door style i have?

3) thats the thing, i created a duplicate of a standard texture and renamed ione to BVC and the other to madagascar. I tried changing the bvc texture to madagascar too and it would update in the project.

No you would nest your door and handle family into your cabinet family. A type catalog is where you get the option to choose what type you want to bring in so you don't have everything loaded at once.

In your project after you have loaded in your cabinet family go to the materials and find the material you assigned to your cabinet and see what it is there.

I would suggest you need to read the families guide and also read up on Type Catalogs and how they are created in your Help file.

hey , so i figured out the texture, thanks for that, but im still having problems loading in different doors.

You said i had two options

1) nesting - which i havent had success doing, so i created a cabient file and 2 door styles. I was able to bring in teh shaker door but i wasnt able to lock it to my  reference planes so the door would be flex parametric with the cabinet.

2) type catalog - doesnt seem possible at all, since  type catalog can only change the parameters of your dimension , i can see it being possible if you can turn on and off different doors through the  visability parameters.

thanks .
