I am trying to show a new opening in an existing ceiling. I dont know how to make that happen in my rcp sheet. I cant change the phase of that opening to new construction.

Your right, you can't seem to phase an opening in an existing ceiling other than the ceiling's phase. You can sketch a hole in your existing ceiling and sketch another ceiling in that hole then demo that if you must model this.
