I have column that I created with a tapered stone base that supports a wood column. I would like the surface pattern to show in elevation but not in plan?

You can over-ride graphics by element and turn that off or turn off the surface pattern by category if it doesn't affect anything else.

is it possible to turn off the surface pattern only in plan view and leave it on in elevation and 3D?

yes. use the visbility graphic overrides (VV command) uncheck the visibility pattern for projection surface.

by overriding the visibility graphics as you suggest, wont that turn off the surface pattern in all views of the column?

because my column has a tapered stone base the pattern shows in all views. I dont want to see it in plan view. but I do want to see in in elevation.

I would like this column to work like a door. as a door is created it is actually closed and there are symbolic lines to represent the open door and swing. the closed door is hidden in plan view yet you can see it in elevation.

so maybe instead of the surface pattern alone is there a way to hide the blend that is the column base in plan view and yet shows in elevation?

Over-riding graphics IN-VIEW by element<< That is the command and that answers your question.
