I have a section view with lots of detail items, dimensions, and notes. I tried to create a similar drafting view by creating a new drafting view and then copying and pasting the detail items in the section into the drafting view. Revit allowed me to do an area select but when I pasted only one or two detail items came through. Doing some quick tests, I found I could copy and paste detail items between drafting views, between section views, and from drafting views to section views, but pasting from section views to drafting views, most of the items didn't paste.Is this a Revitism or is there something simple I'm not understanding? For my case, I'd prefer not to do a Duplicate with Detailing.

Revit will not copy, from a model view to a drafting view, any item it thinks is associated with a model element.  So you are correct in your understanding.  This is a bit of a pain at first but you will learn to accept it and plan ahead.

Remember - you can always "freeze" drawing - Revit free add-in.
