You could store it in the Profile floder in the Imperial Library, but the issue with doing that is when you upgrade you'll have a new Imperial Library and you'll loose all the profiles and other families you created. You should either create a library on you office server and manage the files in a similar manner as the Imperial Library, that way other users can use/share families, or if you're a one man show, create a library somewhere on your on hard drive.

Concerning losing profiles upon upgrade.

If, prior to upgrading, the template drawing is saved as a regular revit project file on a protable harddrive would you still lose your profiles after upgrading?  I would then open the saved file and save it as a template file in the template file storage location.

To solve this problem and to maintain our own families, we have added an office created sub-folder to every library folder.  We keep our office created/updated families in these folders and we ask our users to go there first rather than just using the REVIT supplied families.  By doing this, we can easily move our families to the new REVIT library when an upgrade occurs.
