Any advice on how to get this join to look correct? I'm assuming that it is a problem with "new construction" joining to existing. Current phase setting is "New Construction" and the phase filter is "Show previous and new".

Try Previous and Demo. Or you should try the Wall Joins : Modify > Geometry. You have three options, Butt / Miter / Square off.

Pick join then your diagonal new wall and the vertical existing wall.
