I have an elevation (2d) of a grill drawn in AutoCAD. I would like to imported it into Revit. I thought I could create a new family>Imperial Template>Baluster Panel.rft and import the CAD file into the elevation. The drawing did not come through. Anyone have insight into the best approach to create a 3d grill. It's going to have a concrete wall host, that I created with a solid blend mass. Thanks

Do it as a hatch pattern and give it a transparency of 100. I wouldn't recommend modelling the grille itself. You can then apply a material that has transparency mapping.

The grille is going into an opening in a concrete wall. So I don't think a pattern would works? I'm curious why you believe modeling is not the way to go? Thanks

Because revit is not made to handle modelling detail this small. Revit will facet the shape and make it look incorrect. Either that or use model lines to represent it. I'd recommend the transparent material with surface pattern though... it will look how you need it to look and render correctly.

Okay Mr Spot, I'm going to need some help here. I create a custome pattern in AutoCAD and than import it into Revit? Because Revit is looking for a .pat file when I import a custom pattern. I'm I right so far? I'm still unclear how I put a patten in an opening. You also said, I could do it with model lines, would I insert my CAD file and trace in model mode? Shouldn't the grilel be a family? Does the concrete wall host the grille, or is it free standing in the opening? Thanks again.

setup a section that looks directly at the opening you wish to put the grille. Create an in-place family. Import your can file into the section "current view only". Set the workplane to the face of the wall to host the grille. Insert model lines in the section you created by using the pick command on your cad file. HTH.

Something is not working? I created a section as you suggest, facing the wall that I want to insert the grille in. Than I create an in-place family using the modeling tab. My section grey's out and I insert my dwg file with "current view only" checked, but it didn't show up. So I tried to insert my drawing file in the section without doing the "create family in-place" option and that didn't work either. I was able to insert the drawing into a drafting view but I don't know if I can insert the drafting view into the elevation and have it work in the model. Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks Mr Spot.

Draw a reference plane in the family first, set it as the work plane then import your dwg into your elevation/section.

Mr Spot, sorry for the break, I had to work on other parts of the project. I'm back to the grille now. I created a family by loading family>curtain wall panel>empty panel.rfa. I made it a wall family and imported my CAD file. After I uploaded into project, I could not figure how to insert it into the section view. I also tried to insert the panel into a plan view, but again I could not figure how to access it. I renamed the panel after I inserted the CAD file and I can see it in the directory with the "empty panel.rfa" I used to make the new file; "waterfallgrille.rfa". Hope you can help me.
