Hello

I've just started creating detail component families for adding 2D graphics to callouts from wall sections.

First Question: What is the difference between family templates "Detail item line based.rft" and "Detail Item.rft" The first is based on a reference line?

I don't seem to be understanding the difference between reference lines and plains as well. Wondering if this is my problem atm. Using plains now and not lines.

What I'm trying to do is create a rigid insulation pattern that stretches to the width and length of my rigid insulation area in section details.

(side thought, maybe I should just make a custom pattern instead of a detail family?)

For the length I have a nested family arrayed with parameters to make it fit the overall length, this works.

Width is set as 38mm with the idea I scale the linework wider for thicker exterior rigid insulation.

Where I am screwed is the line work from the nested family. I want to stretch it ONE DIRECTION ONLY, out from the center equally with grips. (The repeating pattern is two separated lines) I can't seem to lock these lines end points to where I want them to stay. The two lines also never touch but the parameters move both of them together.

The lines will not stay at the center and stretch to the sides. They both move and stretch at the same time in ways I can't control and don't want.

It is also harder in that I have an overlap (offset maybe a better word) of the lines at the center, hence the linework does not stop at the center ref plain.

Please see the files I attached.

Spent two days trying to figure out these concepts as I thought I could apply these basic methods to other family creation. Hence hopefully not wasting my time.

The other option:

If I could keep the relationship of the linework in the middle, set my family to one side of the zone I'm trying to fill. Then pull the oposite side to the other edge of the insulation boundry. All the while moving the center where the two lines have a slight overlap, maintaining their position relative to eachother. This would be ideal but it seemed harder to me.

proably a clear a mud but can somebody help!!!!!! Please!!!!!!!! This is driving me nuts. Why is a simple thing so hard in Revit!?

A detail item line based allows you to draw a detail from a start and endpoint of a line where just a detail Item is one part of the family.  This is explained in your HELP  http://wikihelp.autodesk.com/Revit/enu/2013/Help/00001-Revit_He0/1468-Document1468/1872-Detailin1872/1905-Insertin1905/1907-Creating1907

Reference lines and planes are also described in your HELP menu.

Looking at your family you are better off doing this as a Filled Region with a .PAT file.
