Dear Revit Experts,

Please help me understand where I can find curtain wall Mullions. Or find a template to create one.

I have 5 mullion profiles in my library (two of them from Revitcity), but I can’t change their category from Profile to Curtain Wall Mullions. When I download them to my project, Revit downloads them and then says that can’t download the family, because it its not of the “Curtain Wall Mullions” category.

I have panels and grids in my curtain wall. In my project browser I found 6 profiles under the category “Curtain Wall Mullions”, but Revit says that I have no mullions loaded in the project.

What do I do wrong?

Where can I find these real mullions? I think, a couple of default ones should be in the project. Where are they? When I try to edit type of my curtain wall, there is only “None” in the mullions’ dropdown list.

Please help. Jeff Hanson’s video is very good, I do what he says, but all my attempts are fruitless.

Please advice.

 Thanks.

 Hi Glenlake,

The process to create a curtain wall might be confusing.

 Please try following steps:

 1. Open a new project, draw a basic wall; then pick that wall, in "Properties" window on the right, extend it and select “Curtain Wall”. That wall will be changed to a curtain wall.

 2. In plan view, pick that wall, you will see “Edit Profile” shown in “Mode” panel, pick it, Revit will change the view to an elevation.

 3. Switch to the “Architecture”, pick “Curtain Grid”, now you can place the grids as you like.

 4. Now select “Mullion” in “Architecture” panel, if “No Curtain Wall Mullions family….., Would you like to load one now?”  showed, pick “No”. This indicates that your template file has no mullion, or you purged all “Un-used”. I think that you stoped here. All your needs are the next two steps.

 5. Go to “Project Browser”, in “Families”, you still can see “Curtain Wall Mullions”; pick “Rectangular Mullion” for example, right click it, a window will pop up, click “New Type”. You will see a new ”Rectangular Mullion” type added under it; rename it to “4x4”, right click it; select “Type Properties” in new pop-up window, change both “Width on side 1” and “Width on side 2” to 4 inches.

 6. Now you can go to “Architecture” panel, pick “Mullion”, you will see “Placement” panel, pick “All Grid Lines”; then move mouse to curtain wall elevation, click it. You will see all mullions changed to 4x4.

Pretty confusing right? Hope this can help.

Dear CDWdavid;

Thank you very much for your reply!

I have browsed several tutorials, everything on Youtube, Revit Help, and only you gave me the answer I was looking fore.

It is really complicated. In ArchiCAD it is much simplier.  I think you were right, I, probably, purged un-used mullions.

Your explanation is very good. Just tell me please, what do you call "Architecture"?

Actually, all the procedure is understandable, but I still don't understand, why these mullion profiles which I downloaded from Revitcity, software does not recognize as appropriate ones?

Thank you and good night.

Hi Glenlake,

You are very welcome.

"Just tell me please, what do you call "Architecture"?

Did you mean "Ribbon" and "Architecture" Tab?

This thread might answer your last question.

Thanks.

Probably, you work with Revit 13 or 14 - I have no "Architecture" on my ribbon. But it is not important.

Thank you ror the reference. Actually, i have read it before, and now read it more thoroughly.

If you have an extra minute, could you explain how to change the Category (or Family type) of the two mullions whici i downloaded from RevitCity (there are only two in Downloads). Why Revit does not consider them of the correspondent category?

Thank you.

Both worked, Standard_Curtain_Wall_Horizontal_Mullion_Profile_5988, and Standard_Curtain_Wall_Horizontal_Mullion_Profile_5989.

Try following steps:

1. Load both into your project, which you had 4x4 rectangular mullion before. You will see them in project "Families", under ""Profiles".

2. Go to the elevation view for that curtain wall with 4x4 mullions.

3. Select any mullion, not the entire curtain wall. Go to "Properties", pick "Edit Type", the "Type Properties"window will be popped up.

Under "Construction", point your mouse to the very-right side of the right column of "Profile", you will see a pull down sign, which you can switch to _5988 for example. Then the mullions are all changed to that profile.

By the way, in Revit 2012, "Architecture" tab, called "Home".

Thank you! Really great explanation. I hope it will help many people.

And now it is clear with misterious "Architecture". Is it Revit13 or 14?

 All the best!

Thanks so much for the explanation, CDWdavid!  I'd swear that Revit has more exceptions than rules!

CDWdavid,

I was going nuts trying, just as glenlake. Very clear explanation. Four years later still useful. Thank you.
