I was wondering if anyone has experience in exported IFC files in a BIM environment.

I've been working with a QS where they are analysising our Structural Model for costing and, if you listen to BuildingSMART and a lot of the AEC industry, IFC is the format we should be pushing towards for exports. However, we're finding that we are having more success exported my database through the DWFx format. Obviously, we are being very diligent about the QS analysising our model and we are trying to pull our database apart so we fully understand what is what and making the QS (and ourselves) fully aware of what each parameter means and also what each value represents for each element.

The main problem I have is that IFC export for Revit has just recently been certified by BuildingSMART, so the export function has been full of glitches up until now. Though, Autodesk have not published anything about this on their 'known issues' document. A lot of the AEC industry is pushing/buzzing about the IFC format. However, if a software vendor is not certified by BuildingSMART then how can we trust the integrity of the export/import functions between software packages. (e.g.) If I export to the QS and their software has not been certified by 'BuildingSMART' then surely this applies risk to the project ?

I'm a bit confused with the whole thing and looking for some advice if anyone has it.

IFC has always been a work in progress since its conception in 1994 by AutoDESK.  I suggest you read as much as you can on the limitations - start here:
