Hi, I guess this question, from some one who has never heard of Revit before until now, shall be my interoduction here.

I'm drawing walls in floor plan view (generic type) and finding it just virtually impossible to have it dimensioned correctly. As for all architectural plan I'm assign to replicate in Revit for a class, the wall dim all seem to be from face to face. But if I draw a separate wall and move them together (and auto joined) or just draw from one of the wall "corner" -no matter how I construct them the joined end of the walls when using Modify to edit the temporary dimension are from the center of the walls. Is this just how this program works?

Note that I have set the place wall tool as finished face exterior in the option bar (not sure if it makes a difference) AND I DO have the temporary dimension setting to FACE and not to centerline.

Attached is the scenario: really simple test run.

In the picture there's the witness line on the 10 ft wall which I try to move the end grip to the top face (outer?) face of the 18 ft wall, with no avail.

P.S: I think this may be a common problem from a few threads I tried to look up.  Any definitive answer on this? (my textbook on Revit seem not bothered about this (BUT I AM!) as all the pictures they have are seems just dimensioned from the wall center)

The only "workaround" I have experience is if I keep drawing walls I can then dimension them using each other as "reference". Is that normal too? Seems awful fragile and cumbersome to me...and if I have too many thing I find I can't find the right "reference" for certain segments.

Thanks.

I'm not sure if I am following the question correctly.  You want the temporary dimensions to go from the edge or face of the wall instead of the center?  Just go to Manage>Additional Settings>Temporary Dimensions and change the properties.

As teafoe says....We have this set in our template to faces of core because that is where we dimension to.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

However, I have already set that to Face beforehand (not sure if face of core since I haven't gotten to using more complicated material yet). But it's definitely not Center for the Wall portion of the setting and IT IS STILL acting like the image I had there. (the wall I was using is just the Generic 6"). The image is when I made the two wall and used Modify on them.

Is there something else I'm missing in setting or is this just how this program behave? (Mighty annoying if it is; found a post somewhere else dated 2005 that describe my problem exactly and this is already version 2013...)

Hi drixomanbeta,

Try hovering your mouse over the wall you want to dimension. Before you click hit the tab key and it will pick up all the dim points avail. one by one.

Yes, I see your issue and I've had the same problem.  I learned to use the temporary dims to set the overall length of the wall from face to face.  You just have to pick the temp dim that is parallel to the wall and relocate the ends to the faces and then set the length in the dimension box.
