i created an in-place family on a named reference plane i created in line with the wall face. How can I copy this to other walls or other named reference planes?  Or was there a differnt way to create it in the first place?

It appears in the families listing of course.   but i cant seem to copy it, drag and drop it or any right-click functions to make it come into the model.    I can copy it along with the ref plane in plan view.   Seems like there ought to be a way to make an in place family then copy it onto other planes, grids etc.  I'll have to go through a whole familes tutorial, yes I promise...

so far i can select then copy (CO) and click to place and/or rotate (RO) any model-in-place into another position. (sometimes i play around the disjoin and constrain tick boxes as well)

but it seems you need/want it to be a loadable family and since you started it in a model-in-place way, hope this thread will help: http://www.revitcity.com/forums.php?action=viewthread&thread_id=23652
