Hi,

I have the attached family of a steel open mesh grating. It was created using several family elements and joining these together. I imported this open mesh to a project with a steel frame. In this project steel columns often pierce through the open mesh grating. I would like to create voids through open meash grating, at column locations so that it looks reasonable.

Would you have an idea how this could be solved? Thanks!

I think you will find that grating families may kill your project.... at the very least really slow them down.  You are much better off to use a material.  Check out the stock materials that have voids in them to start to understand this process.

It is client's requirement (has to look realistic with all end plate details etc) so cannot avoid it this time. I would appreaciate some help with the voids issue.

 i would:

-edit the column family and add void into it. (what i usually do is select the solid and paste to same place, then change the solid to void, then lock all the parameters same as the solid.)

-the solid and the new void should be uncut.

-make sure cut with void is ticked.

-then load to the project

-cut the grating and column
