I was given a file from a client. I open the file and detach from central. i detached and preserved worksets. i can select some elements in the project but there are others i can't select (ie gridlines or some model elements). what am i doing wrong?

Unless you plan on turning the file you have back into a central file you should NOT preserve worksets. I suspect this is your problem.

 

Discard the worksets when you dettach. As is, you will need to make all the worksets editable to edit the content of the file..

 

Dettaching a central file, leaving worksets enabled and not converting it back to a central file will cause you problems.

 

The whole reason you have the option to preserve worksets is to turn it back into a new central file.
