What is the difference between a "Mark" and a "Type Mark" and when placing a door tag which one is referenced, and for the life of me why dont they simply call it a "Door Number" value...

Mark has always been a standard for everything numbered in construction.  These two parameters are shared and can be used however you want.  Your schedule "title" can be changed to say Door Number. 

The mark is the standard that Revit will automatically index on placement but you can set up your door tag to use any shared parameter.  Some people use the Type Mark as a sub mark in their Tag.... with the Mark set to the room number and the type mark on a seperate line with a sub-mark for additional doors in the same space.  exmp 100/A, 100/B, 100/C.  So that all doors from room 100 are easily recognized.
