Can anyone comment on the pros/cons of generating detail groups versus detail component families, besides scheduling and tagging. I am trying to convince people it is better to always create families.

Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean besides detail groups?  If you are making groups of your details then they are already families right?  Or are you asking the difference between detail components and just drafting lines

Detail families are easier to load into projects.

Detail families can be parametrically controlled.

(We use one for storefront mullions that can change size and has parametric "glass" lines - similar one for door frames)

Detail families can have flippers - no need to mirror.

Detail grouping may include detail components

Use detail families for definable elements that will be used in multiple projects.

Detail groups can be used as defined for multiple locations with single place editing but they can also be used to get a group of elements "near" where you want them then ungroup to correctly place as individual elements.  << Sort of a template of required elements.
