I just inserted the family  "counter top w sink".  The sink is ridiculously large for my small house.  Is there not a way to change the size without having to go directly into the family?

It is easy enough to alter the Sink and countertop in the Family. After all you are trying to learn Revit and learning that you can alter things and build new ones will make your job much easier.
