I have attached a Family that I'm trying to make more useful.  This model is a recessed soffit with trim profiles that is used in many locations.  I used the Generic Model template file as I wasn't sure I want this to be hosted by the ceiling. What I really want is the extrusion at the top of the soffit to act as a host in the project file.  I cannot figure out a way to assign the category ceiling to this object.  Nor can I put a ceiling element in the family file.  My current work around is to take the lid off of the family and then place a ceiling in each location, not something I'm looking forward to doing.

Any helpful tips to creating a family that can act as a hosting ceiling element?

Another thing is that I wanted to do is make the length adjustable on the fly, however 90% of the time the length will be the same.  Is it possible to set one family type as "default length" to reset the family to it's original length, but allow the user to adjust the length to suit when placing the family in the project file?

See attached.

Tom

It sounds like you are trying to dictate how you want Revit to work rather than learning how to use Revfit.  I suggest you change your process.  Perhaps this family would be better off as face based and any objects wou want to place on it should also be face based.

"...adjustable on the fly..." and "default length" are not compatible.  If default is more important, then use type parameters.  Then you can always switch a family to the default type.  If you want adjustable then use instance parameters.
