I am trying to understand material keynotes, I have a block wall that I have added a paint finish to using the paint tool. The element keynote is telling me the correct information about the wall. When I use the material keynote I get the same information as the element keynote. I have noticed when double clicking on both element and material keynotes they go to the same family  - Keynote tag.rfa

How do I get the material tag to tag the paint finish I have applied to the block wall?

I wish people would spend at least a little time in Revit's Help.  Search keynote and you get this:

http://wikihelp.autodesk.com/Revit/enu/2012/Help/Revit_User's_Guide/1394-Document1394/1660-Annotati1660/1745-Keynotes1745/1752-Types_of1752

And you should also read:

I am still learning Revit. I am producing the construction documents for my first project, which is my own proposed new home. It's great, but I have a question about keynotes. I would really like to be able to list all of the elements in a schedule or text form for my project in one location, while pulling up my master keynoting text file so that I can customize the text file to fit my partcular project. If there is a way to do that I have not been able to find it.

You can schedule your elements by category.

You can purge unused and the families left are the ones you have used.

That's all I know of.

A keynote file is just a txt file.  Open it with word - swipe across it all and change it to caps.

You have to explain better.  The term keynote is often miss-used.  Revit has several methods of "keynoting".

  1. A keynotes file is usually the best because of it's control.  You have one txt file that may be your office standard, is kepth with the project and may be customized for that project.  BUT - It can ONLY be edited with a text editor.  Keynotes can be tagged by number and use a keynote legend for the text or can be tagged with the text.
  2. Some elements may have text in them that can act like keynotes but are only in the project and have to be edited there.
  3. Some elements may have a kenote number that looks up the text from your keynote file.
  4. You can also have material notes.

The one problem with keynotes is that they need an element that can be tagged.  Typically most people think that has to be a model element and then they don't have those in drafting views.  But this is NOT completely true.  You can create a detail family that will host a keynote and can be placed in drafting views.  We have one that has invisible linework so it can be used anywhere.

I'm not sure what you are asking.   Did you know you can use a material tag that reads the description in the material definition?  As an example, we have several different rigid insulation materials, one for each thickness that we use and the thickness is in the material description.
