I am trying to get my head around families, and I would like a clear understanding of the various template types that are available with Revit.  Some of them I understand readily like floor, and ceiling based templates but others I'm not so sure.  For example:

RPC Family.rft

Generic Model Pattern based.rft

I've been reading lots of books that caution about making families dependent on hosts that may not be visible for consultants but I have not found a spread sheet or simple explanation that shows how all these templates vary, what they are useful for and what settings they are intended.  Does anyone know of a link to some place that explains each type and gives some pros and cons for each?

Your REVIT HELP is one of the best resources you have - learn to use it.  Under families, you will find this:
