Hello,
I have a central file that's named  Mech.rvt.  Another user Is working in a local file, Plumbing.rvt, that syncs to a Central File, CentralFile_130211.rvt
I want to use my Central file, Mech.rvt, to create a local file, Mech_Local.rvt, that will read the Central File, CentralFile_130211.rvt.
Another twist..........the central file is in a different folder
Can anyone help?

Not sure if I quite understand what you are doing but you cannot create a local file from a central file and sync with a different central file.

Here's how it works. You are supposed to create a local file from your central file then INSERT > 'Link REVIT' in the other central files. That's how it goes.

The arch file 'link' in the mech, struct and elect central files.

The mech file 'link' in the arch, struct and elect central files.

etc. . . . etc. . . .

I think dgcad got it right. That's exactly what I need to do.

We're in the same office using (2) Central Files.

I'm working in my own Central Model creating a duct system, "Linking" the Arch's Model into my Central File.

The Plumbing engineer has his own Central Model creating Plumbing systems. He has a Local File that Syncs to his Central File. He " Links" the Arch's Model into HIS Central File.

So we have (2) Central Files.

We want (1) Central File, (HIS), w/o losing any work we've done.

Any Suggestion. I hope dgcad didn't get it right.....smile

It is typically a poor practice to have all trades in one file.  Some of our engineers do have all of the MEP in one file but you will find that architectural and structural are best kept seperate but linked.

Yes, My thoughts exactly.

BAD PRACTICE:

Have Two Local Files, (1) Mech and, (1) plumbing that Sync into a Central File?

GOOD PRACTICE:

Have (1) Central Mech Discipline (as a central) and (1) Central Plumbing Discipline (as a central)

and "Link" the two into each other as necessary......Along with Linking in the Arch, Struct, etc. Models.

I would also suggest that your linked files are put into their own worksets.  Then you can turn them on/off ane even not load them if they are too large.

Hello WWhub

Thx for your responses

..........The Elect. Engr:

The Electrical Engineer syncs the same Central File as the Plumbing Engr.

The Elec. Engr. would like to have one Central Model in order for him to get the electrical data coming off the Mech

Equipment. He can't get that from a "Linked Mech" model. He claims and he's right. Right? But he can put the Mech Equipment in "his" model as a placeholder.

Is that a work around?

a "live" model

.............Or did I just screw everything up?

the words "Live Model" at the end paragraph is text I forgot to erase. So nevermind that.

If this is not a very large model, then the MEP can all be in one file.  But the problem is where are you in your process?  If it is just model elements, you can bind the link and explode it.  Then delete the group that had been created.

Can the elect copy monitor the items he needs from the linked file?  That would give him something to connect to.

1. It is a large Model. 70k sq.ft.

2. Binding the Link. Meaning The Mech. Is it a Full or Partial explode?

3. I suppose he could Copy Monitor the Mech Equipment. (Why not just add the Mech Equipment to his file, he's getting     the same cut sheets from the Project Engineer that I am.)

thx

........................Sounds like I screwed up

1.I think we can Cut and Paste all the information from the Mech and place it onto a new project_1.

2. Create another new project_2 (Local) that sync the Central file that will be used.

3. Align the Cut and paste info onto the new project_2.

thanks HUB
