Hi all,

Just wondering if you can help me with something.

I have been trying to model a light fitting with Metric Electric Fixture family template.

So that I can see the 2d block on the floor plan I have model the symbol at a level of 1500mm from the Ref level. We rarely show electrics on our space planning drawings so this will be fine. I then want to produce a 3d model on the actual ceiling level (always 2600mm) for use in renderings etc.

I'm then testing the family in the ground floor plan view - the 2d symbol at 1500mm works fine UNTIL I start modelling the 3d aspect of the family, and when I import it into a test .rvt file both the 2d symbol AND 3d model disappear (the 3d does appear in the 3d view however).

What am I doign wrong? Apologies for the (probably) stupid question.

Lee

I'm afraid your explanation is a little confusing. Please don't use the word 'block' and don't think 'block' either. There are families, nested families, nested symbol families, solids, voids and parameters. Not to be picky but lets deal with the reailty of the situation.

You want something at 1500mm and also on the ceiling ? That part I find hard to get my head around. Either it's on the ceiling or it's at 1500mm. You need to make the call then make it work.

The first thing you need to completely understand is that Elecrical families are, hands down and by a country mile, far more complex than any other type of REVIT family. The complexity of Electrical families make all other families look simple. So if by chance you haven't already invested a couple 100 hours of family building you have your work cut out for you.

In order for (almost) any family to show up in a floor plan something in the family must be either cut or at the very least within the 'view range' of the plan view. This often means providing invisible model lines (with length parameter) within the family to extend it's self ito what could potentially be the view range, in order for the family to get 'cut' and therefore display in the plan view.

Then there is the 'hosting' aspect of the family. How is it hosted. Is it hosted to local geometry. Is it hosted to a linked file. Is it placed on a workplane, surface, wall, ceiling etc.

In a nut shell, electrical families are almost always made up of local solid and void geometry with nested symbol families.

* All parameters that need to be either tagged or scheduled must be part of a 'shared parameter' file. That is critical in the initial setup.

Not sure of the experience at hand here but for someone without advanced experience to take on custom electrical familes is a mighty task indeed and not something that can be explained as a whole in a forum like this.

Hello chaps,

Thank you very much for your replies, esoecially dgcad, and apologies for my poor explanation. As you probably guessed I very new to all this and have been muddling along happily with basic families, either amending  the OOTB ones or making rudimentary new ones.

For these lights I think we will keep it simple and simply use 2d families.

Thanks again.

Lee
