Is there a way to change the family but keep the TAG of the mechanical equipment?

Every time I change the family to another one, Revit erase the TAG that the previous instance had.

Typically in architecture, the tag remains if the family is in the same category.  If not, then the tag goes away.

It's the same category - Mechanical Equipment. You are maybe refering to types within family, e.g same door but different sizes. What if you change door family? Does the door keep it's tag?

No - changing door families keeps the tag.  Same with windows and other elements.

Then why then when I change the family within the Mechanical Equipment category the tag gets erased?
