I am having trouble producing a castellated beam in Revit 2013. When I load the castellated beam family it gives me three options and none of these are the one I want. when I duplicate and try to 'edit type' I can't get it to give me what i need. The beam I'm trying to produce is a 915x229x113 castellated beam which is produced from the original beam of size 610x229x113.Any help would be appreciated on this?Michael

"I can't get it to give me what i need"  Why not?  Do you get an error when you try?

When you duplicate the type you should be able to put in the specifications needed for the dimensions.  Are you using an OOTB family or did you find this family somewhere?

Thanks for the reply

When I duplicate and edit type, in the Type properties on the Dimension or Structural drop downs I expect the beam the castellated beam is formed from to be there in the dropdown list. I'm not sure I have to put in all the web and flange thicknesses etc. This doesn't seem right.

I don't know what OOTB is! The original family comes from within the package.

OOTB=out of the box.

When I insert the OOTB castella beam all I get is CB18x22 and CB21x22/26 I am not sure what the difference between that and the 915x229x113 is.    If you go to edit type, then duplicate you can name it whatever you want and it will appear in the properties drop down list but you will still need to change the dimensions to what you want it to be.  "I'm not sure I have to put in all the web and flange thicknesses etc" If you don't put the dimensions of them in how do you think Revit knows what you want it to be?

ok I started from scratch. The two types I had OOTB were from the UK families CB530x32.9/39 and CB460x28.3.

So I 'Edit Type' the CB530x32.9/39

Then 'Duplicate'

Call this one CB915x229x113

There are three areas to be then filled out in the Type Properties

Construction

Structural

Dimensions

I fill in the dimensions list as I know most of those. I don't know what K1 and r1 are.

The 'structural' and 'Construction'list is confusing, what goes in here.

Why can't the program just give you a drop down and you pick a beam size the castellated beams will be formed from. That makes more sense to be than fillling out flange and web thicknesses.

Anyway I fill out these as best i can but the outcome is not the castellated beam I want which is no surprise to me as i don't know what's to go in half those boxes.

The program doesn't give you a drop down of those sizes because it only has 2 programmed.  Why it only has 2 I do not know.  I also do not know what all of the dimensions in the type properties refer too.  If it is not working with the dimensions you have you may want to check out ARCAT.com to see if they have any BIM models of Castellated Beams, or do a google search to see if you can find what you are looking for.  Sorry that is all the help I can give you.

Thanks for replying anyway. I will go have a look at ARCAT.com and see what I can find.

Thanks again
