Hi all,

My brain is frazzled today and I can't think for the life of me, how to achieve the following:

I have started to create some wall based familes, namely, some 2d electrical symbols.

I'm using the Electrical Fixture Wall Based template to draw my symbols, but how can I get my symbol to relate to the wall face and NOT the wall centreline? A thick wall eats up the symbol, a thin wall gives the symbol a big offset.

Apologies for such a stupid question, but I've tried help and googling to no avail.

Thanks.

In your family group your 2D linework together and align and lock it to the face of the wall

I personally don't like wall based families for these, I believe face based are better.  Then you can place them on different surfaces.

For your wall absed, start with a reference plane well off the face of the wall and parallel to it.  Build your family to this RP.  When finished, add a dimension from the face of the wall to the RP, set it to 0 and then lock it.

I think groups are a big mistake here.  .... just the wrong application.

Hi again,

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply - I knew it would be something simple. Still very much a Revit noob, so thanks again.

WWHub, thanks for the tip for face based families, but I'm sorry, I don't understand,  what do you mean about groups being the wrong application?

Cheers.

Groups are meant to be used for multiple placement.  It is better to build this items and associate them with a plane.
