Hi there,

Firstly, Happy New Year!

Secondly, I have a query that I hope someone can shed some light on.

The company I work for is rolling out Revit over the forthcoming months. We do lots of small modular projects and subsequently do lots (10 -15) of projects a week.

We were recently debating 2d v 3d famililies and whether we could use 2d furniture families for the majority of our jobs, as we envisage doing internal 3d's for say, just 10% of our projects.

My question is, if we were to use 2d families for speed, is there a function for us to be able to quickly replace a 2d component with a 3d version?

Many thanks,

If both families are in the same category, have the same parameters, have the same insertion characteristics (orientation / ref planes) and are hosted the same, then you can simply swap all of the families.  Your process.

  1. Family A (2d in the project).
  2. Open Family B (3d in the family browser)
  3. In the project - rename Family A to "Family B"
  4. Switch to the family editor and pick load into project.
  5. When asked- overwrite Family B in the project.
