I downloaded a furniture component (gigi barstool) from Knoll and a few weird things happened.  First, the furniture's seat and leg sweeps were encased in these blocky masses.  This is how they appeared in my drawing, in both 3D as well as plan views.  I opened the family, deleted the blocky masses, leaving the sleak barstool that I intended to download.  When I loaded this back into my project, it showed up in plan as the representational filled region associated with the family.  However, it was completely invisible in any other view.  I looked at the family's visibility seetings, everything was checked.  I looked at the project's and the individual 3D view's visibility settings, everything was turned on.  No phasing associated with the project...

I attached a project plan view to show the representational masking region of the family, the 3d view where the stool is supposed to be, and a 3d view from the family editor.

Anybody know what the problem is?

Did you clikc on the Reveal Hidden Elements bulb to be SURE it is not hidden in that view.  Does it show up in sections or elevations?

possibly detail level in your project views? i know when we create ours we vary the visbility between detail level (well really it is either visbile (in fine) or not (in course or medium)) so that is what i would check.

i just downloaded it and it works fine.

it does come with a type catalog though and if you were messing with it in the family editor then you probably accidentally deleted the 3-d models (those blocky masses).

It is a lot harder to modify Families with type catalogs because it takes a while to figure out how they were constructed and also what ramifications there will be if you make any changes.

in case you aren't sure how type catalogs work, anytime a revit family comes with a text file, that is the type catalog. if that is the case, do not open the family directly, rather load it into your project using the insert option. it is also important to make sure the type catalog and revit family are in the same location wherever they may be saved.

hope that helps!

Ah!  Yes, revitape,  I did delete the blocky masses - on purpose, not on accident - so that must have been the problem.

So if I keep the family as-is with the type catalog, how to I get it to render and appear correctly?  Becuase it shows up in every view as, you guessed it, the blocky masses.

Thanks.

Even when you change your detail level, it is still blocky?
