Trying to move away from detail lines, masking & filled regions etc. Thoughts on what others are doing...this is mainly to keep all keynotes or tags upto date and have a bit of quick controll over changing detail items with quick swap out instead of having umpteen different views loaded to template.

You are on the right track.  We rarely use anything but the model for plans, elevations, building and wall sections.  Even in details, I prefer using edit cut profile to adding filled regions for most model elements.  We do add repeating detail items/ window/ door/ stud/ framing detail elements to detail views but not normal sections.

There is no reason to have "umpteen different views" in your template.  For drafting - detail views, use a library project file that has these set up on organized sheet views so you can find what you need and load the view into you model using the insert  / insert from file process.
