I've got a custom column in my project that is a square tube at it's base, then flares out higher up. At the levels which it is a simple tube, it also shows the flare.

The simple question is, why doesn't it show the column accurately based on the plan view in which it is cut? (ie. level 1 = square tube, level 3 = flared 18 x 8 tube)

Update... I've tried various solutions to this and have one but the original question still remains...

The option I tried that worked was simply creating a Generic Face based Family. When I brought it in, the "column" was represented accurately throughout its height in each plan. Since that worked, I went back to the family and changed the category to Structural Column. When I reloaded that back into the project in no longer looked correct.

Since Revit Structure isn't my forte, is there a visibility issue I am missing somewhere when it comes to Structural Columns? Back to the original question.... why doesn't the flared column show accurately in accordance to where it is cut in plan?

Search your help.... "cuttable" - your answer is there.

I didn't really find an answer there. I found info on visibilty/graphics manipulation (which I am already aware of) and a list of cuttable and non-cuttable objects.

But since generic models and structural columns are both considered "cuttable", I still don't understand why the exact same extrusion does not look the same in various plan views when the only difference is its family category.

It does not appear that structural column families are truely cuttable.

I had not remembered that they were cuttable so I checked 2009 help and it says it was cuttable there too.  I did not check to see if it really was.

I must have had this problem before and referred you to the help thinking it was not cuttable.  Sorry.

No prob. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

It's a good thing to know but still very much leaves the question of... Why Autodesk, WHY?
