Hey alabaster,

I just got a PCIe expansion box (delivery sometime this month) and I'm going initially test a Quadro 600 I happen to have lying around.  So my computer will see 2- quadro 4000's and a quadro 600.  Question for you, have you had any experience mixing fermi and kepler cards on 3dsmax on the same system?  not a lot of google info out there on it.  my first inclination is just to slap in another quadro 4000 (256 cores) and play it safe...since those can be had for about the same price as a gtx 580 on ebay now.

thanks,

i say try the 660 ti. thats what i have at home now and its pretty ridiculous. you can achieve quality renders in about 15 seconds with octane altho i have had some issues with it trying to load larger scenes. Vray RT seems to like it as well. as for iray ive kind of lost interest since Octane and Vray RT tests are so much faster. autodesk always seems to be bringing up the rear as far as performance of their programs go.

One issue.  It only has two LP4 power connectors (which can be coverted to 1 - 6pin molex pci-e).  Thus I can only connect an nvidia card with 1- 6pin requirement.  This limits me to either the Quadro 4000, 5000, or K5000....or a 650ti....which is kind of like, why bother?  If I swap out Netstor's little 220Watt power supply (its TINY in size!) for something with legitimate multiple 6 and 8pin connectors I can build out more capacity in card selection.

my quadro 600 runs like a dream in it though.  My thought is to go with a fermi quadro 5000 due to the fact you can pick one up for about $550 now and according to toms' hardware its "rough equivalent" is the 660ti....but WAY better drivers and power managment than the 660ti.  They say to watch out for the marketing of Kepler's "1536 CUDA cores!" claims because its not actually as strong as the Fermi cores apparently...theres just a ton more cores.

I'm not going to rush anything and wait for the new year before I do anything drastic.  I'll see what prices look like and maybe Nvidia will release their "kepler refresh" numbers Q1 of 2013.

Thanks for the input, i'll keep you informed of what happens.

i had the 560 ti and swapped it for the 660 ti and it was a night and day difference. perhaps it was from the double in memory from 1 gb to 2 gb. just be concious of the fact that for gpu rendering the scene can only load if it fits on your smallest memory GPU. i have some high detail night club models that wont even load onto my 660 ti. my ideal cost effective 2 gpu system is Quadro 600 running my screen and my 660 ti for rendering (turn on the 600 ti for some Assasins Creed III)

power seems to be my biggest issue as well. i have a 800w power supply and when i ran the 560 ti and 660 ti it overloaded my system
