How would i add a material to this bath tub in revit 2013? For some reason it does not give me the option and i can not add materials by going into the family.

If the elements in the family are Revit, then materials are initially controlled by assignment in the family per individual element.  If the elements are CAD imports then they too are controlled in the family initially by assignment to the CAD layers.

NOTE the term INITIALLY.... Once any item is loaded into a project, the materials are loaded as well.  That means if the material in the family was called tub and colored as blue and it is redefined as tub colored red, it will be red in new projects but any it was already loaded into will be blue.

^^ Read and re-read this.  THE PROJECT RULES!

so the only way for me to change the materials is to have the initial file?

I did not say that.....

If the family is loaded then so is the material.... so if the material is now in the project, it has to be changed there ... or deleted and the material changed in the family and the family reloaded.

Think about this.  You should design all families with an initial material that is well named so that it can be controlled in the project.   After all, not all projects are the same - so this is why the PROJECT RULES.
