There is a lot of information that comes along with materials.  Is it really necessary to have all of the materials available in one family?  If you are trying to keep the file small I would suggest not putting all of them in the family and just create what you need when needed.  However 612 isnt obsurdly large.

Agreed 612KB is not large at all.  Revit Content Style guide recommends it to be between 300KB-500KB.  I thought of having a separate file with the factory finishes for rendering purposes.  However I doubt architects and designers will want to load 2 families in whenever loading in these casework families.  

 

So I think I'm going to stick with keeping the 16 materials in the family.
