I see a lot of old threads where people are trying to save .rte as .rvt, but I'm trying to do the reverse...I think. We have been working on our company template by setting up a dummy .rvt file loaded with all the families, annotations, linetypes, etc. that we will need on most projects. My question now is, how do I save this as a .rte file so that others can just load it as a template for a new project instead of having to open it and doing "save as" each time?

Right now the Save As>Revit Template option is grayed out. Am I going about setting up a template correctly?

What version are you talking about? because I don't have any problem with that...

Hmm, I just checked it out and it seems it won't save as an .rte if it is a local version of a central model. I did "save as" and detached it from the central model and then I was able to save the new standalone model as an .rte.

But one more question: if I do this, do I lose any functionality of the .rvt file? Will the .rte file still have all of the schedules, families, etc. loaded into it when people start a new project using it as a template? Or is it better to have them start all projects through the .rvt and do "save as"...??

You can change only the extension from .rvt to .rte and it will simply work. But you have first disconnect all connections with central files.

This is only applicable for Revit 2012
