Anyone know what this means, I was trying to model a simple set of stairs in component>model-on-place

First, are you sure you can't create these stairs using the stair tools?

Second, the error means exactly what it says.  It can't create the family you called stairs.  You have done something wrong and you need to look again at what you have done.  We have no way of knowing what you are doing.
