Hello,

This is my first question to the forum, hope it goes well.

I'm having some trouble with curtian wall panel parameters in Revit 2013. I'm trying to create a pretty elaborate mullion/shading device that has some parametric properties and I can't quite get it to work right. I broke everything down, and I think the problem is stemming from the most basic buliding block of the panel, but it's what I'm buliding everything else off of. Hopefully this is a pretty easy fix.

So when you open a new curtain wall family, the default view is 'ref level' view. If I dimension from the left reference plane to the right reference plane, and give that dimension a parameter called 'panel width', I can bulid everything off of that. I can pull the width around with my mouse, and everything adjusts perfectly. But if I try to control the width in the 'Family Types' box, it says I can't because constraints are not satisfied. I broke the entire thing down and started over with a new family, dimensioned from left to right, changed the width in family types, and got the same error.

This seems like a very simple problem, but I just can't figure it out for the life of me.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

You never set the panel width - that is set by the opening available.

Yes, the panel width is set by the available opening, but I want the panel width to drive some dimensions of the mullion.

For example, if I want the sunshade to span three panel widths, I would set two more reference planes that are spaced the same as the width of the panel. To do this, I'm trying to give the panel width a dimension parameter, then apply that parameter to the next two refernece planes.

So no matter how wide the opening that the panel is being placed in, the sunshade will span two more panel widths.

I suggest you don't use the curtain wall for this.  A simple family will work much better.  I have done just that on multiple projects.

I would use a face based family and place it on one of the mullions in the project.  A simple instance based width parameter would allow you to stretch it to whatever matches your CW.

OK, I attached an image of the sunshade I am trying to make. I know there are a few ways to do it, but I would like to make it parametric so that it adjusts along with a change in panel width or floor to floor height.

The red pattern is 350mm off of the facade in plan. I'm not really sure what to call it, I guess a sunshade. I would like to make the portion of the shade highlighted in yellow, attached to the panel with a heavy black line around it. That way, I can give the shade a visibility parameter and turn it on or off if the pattern shifts.

I built it so that whatever the dimension 'w' and 'h' are, the shade goes right for 2w, then up h, then left 2w, up h again, etc...

I built it and pushed and pulled the width and height around in elevation, and everything adjusted as needed. It's just not quite perfect in the project environment, though. Back in the family editor, when I try to adust it in the Family Types box, it won't let me, and I think that original framework of 'w' and 'h' is the reason why...

If those elements are all fixed dimensions, then you can use an array on those, your problem is on odd sized panels where you may need a filler on each end.

Search through the forums and you will find many discussions on arrays in families.
