I have to produce an 8'-0" wide [2438mm for you Aussie's) rendering at 300 DPI for a billboard and I am struggling. PC keeps running out of memory. (16gb)

Any tips on how to produce a large format rendering like this ??

Tried rendering to Screen and Printer?

What about splitting it up in sections using the render region?

Thx . . . interesting suggestion. As long as I can accurately locate the splice points and sew them back together.

I called a printing house and they said they can blow it up from a smaller image and retain a decent resolution as long as the original was 300 DPI. I think I'll try that next.

My machine also has 16 gigs, and I have never run out of memory on a render... although I've never tried for 300dpi over 96 inches.  I would suggest toning down your render quality to no higher than high ( I like medium) and render at 600dpi and a smaller actual size.  (this doesn't make logical sense, but I'd do it anyway)  10000px blown up to 8 ft is still more resolution than a computer monitor, at 108dpi opposed to 96.

So 300dpi on a billboard is just outrageous, in my opinion.  300 dpi is the resolution you need for an inkjet photo you hold up to your nose.  150 dpi would totally suffice, even if people got 3 ft away from it in a board room.

Aim for 15,000px width, and I think you'll be satisfied with the final product.

if you are using windows 7 64bit you could also try plugging in any thumb drives you have and turn on the "readyboost" function. you can add a couple hundred gigs of memory this way but I am not sure how exactly readyboost and mental ray work together.

You should be able to do this type of blow-up work yourself also in photoshop.
