Ahh--as a separate family. Not to be confused with a separate project.

If that's what you meant.  Go to options (big purple R)-->new-->family-->window.  You'll have to select it from the long list of available family templates.  Now, you model it just as if you were making an in-place family.  Except in this case you can reuse it in any other project.

Ok cool thanks! So what i need to do is open up a new family file> then i select window > when i do that it gives me a wall with a an opening already in it. So do i delete all of that? or do i build the custom window using that wall and opening already given? Why cant i just get rid of all that in the file and just start building a window from scratch

NO! do not delete the preset family items.  They will help you in creating your window family.  There are some preset parameters that you will use to get started on your window.
