...100 KB. Is there some compression setting that I have missed? I wanted to get the renderings out of the project file, but I don't want the 100 KB image to be the only one available.

Export as a tiff, png, or bitmap. open in photoshop or the like, and resave as jpg. For renders--my memory is fuzzy, but I don't think there is an option to export a "lossless" jpg when you do it from the render dialog box, whereas you do have a lossless jpg option when exporting images from the option menu/export/images and animations.
