My advice is to use a swept blend.  Start with one swept blend, which has an arc for a path, and a square for the first profile.  Give it a second square profile, elevated as high as your spiral will rise in a half turn. 

finish the swept blend--then mirror it, move it end to end, and start copying the segments upward.  Perhaps this meets your needs right here. 

But, for added fun, you can use the edges of this swept blend as the 3D path of a regular sweep, since sweeps are much more flexible for profile changes.

 

Edit:   And of course, any of these profiles could be hollow/a tube instead.
