I have a Fire Hydrant family that is to be placed in the corner of a stair core and I want to embed an adjustable filled region showing the required clearance around the hydrant when shown in plan.

Firstly, there does not seem to be a filled region tool available in the Plumbing Family itself. So I attempted to make a filled region detail component with adjustable dimensions and shared the parameters before loading into the 3D plumbing family. However revit came up with an error saying shared detail components cannot be placed into 3D families.

I can get a static detail component family with a visibility Yes/No parameter to work, but you still need to edit the base details components dimensions and reload it into the hydrant family if you want to adjust the clearance parameters.

I there a way I can have an adjustable filled region nested into the main hydrant family?

Using Revit 2012

Thanks

You can have a filled region nested into a family but it will not show up in a 3D view.

Why not, in the family, create a new sub-category called Clearance (dashed linetype) and just add symbollic linework in that category?  Then this can be turned off.
