I'm trying to add a glass door to a storefront system (Revit 2013) and when I try to load the "single glass" family I get an error that Revit cannot load that Family.  This is how I have changed curtainwall or storefront panels in previous versions of Revit, is there a different way to do it in 2013?  How am I supposed to load these families into my model?

Revit still works the same way except it does limit family loading to appropriate views.  Simply change to an elevation view of your storefront, be in the view, then load your family.

Not sure how you did it in the past.

Here's how I would approach putting a glass door into a curtain store front.

Start by using the 'Load Family' tool and load the door(s) 'Curtain Wall Sgl Glass.rfa' or Curtain Wall Dbl Glass.rfa from the Door folder.

In the modeling window click (and tab) to select the existing Curtain Panel (to be replaced).

Un-pin it by picking the blue Pin.

Select the panel again and using the Type Selector change it to one of the above Door Types.

You cannot just place a door into a store front, you have to swap out the panel for one of the special door types listed above.

You also have to make sure the curtain grids and mullions are in the correct position because the inserted door will simply fill the panel space.

Hope that helps.

dgcad - that is precisely how I have added doors and am trying to do it now... The problem is that when I select a glass pane, the only options I have are "glass" or "solid" panels.  I need to load in the glass door family so that it shows up as an option.

wwhub - I have tried to load the family in a floor plan view, elevation, 3d view, section... every time I get the same error:

"some or all of the family files you selected cannot be loaded.  you must choose family files of the category compontent.  Do you want to retry loading a new set of files?"

this is a standard family, not one I have created or edited.

Interesting . . . . . I don't have 2013 in front of me. Just 2012, 2011.

If you go straight to the 'Load Family' tool off the Insert Tab (not from any other command or from the type selector or dialog box) it usuually doens't qualify the 'Category'. You are loading a family. It could be a detail component, door, window, curtain wall, profile  . . . . . . .

It's different if pick 'load family' from within a command sequence or dialog box.

Try this: Start REVIT and do nothing except pick the 'Load Family' tool off the 'Insert' tab. REVIT should not question the category ?? How would it know what category you intend to insert ? You should be able to insert any category.

We already witnessed (and mourned) the loss of the original REVIT programmers. That was evident a few releases ago. Now we're getting stuck with the AutoCAD Architecture programming failures . . . . DOH !

GENIUS!  (You, WWHub, not autodesk!)

and this explains some of the other problems with loading furniture etc that I'm having.  I'll have to play around with that stuff too and re-learn some new habits.  what a crock!

thanks for your help

Arch you post a lot of tutorials you find in old threads.  It is much better if you put them in the tips and tricks section under a new thread with a corresponding subject title.

Sorry, I am not good with these forums. I simply google my problems and these are the threads that come up. I don't pay much attention to the dates. I then find the links on youtube, and post them here for others after me to follow. If you can send me a link to where you are suggesting that I post, I'll happily post there instead.

Thanks!
