Has anyone tried using 3dsMax with an external GPU. Regarding something like the Nvidia Quadro Plex 2000 or 7000? Does that actually work? Trying to take Revit to Max for high end iRay rendering.
thanks in advance to anyone that can answer this,

I only bring this to attention since I see a LOT more Nvidia Quadro Plex's on ebay than ever before. Seems like a super cheap way to quickly....VERY quickly produce renderings, essentially real-time 1080p HD. Anyone?

I have not used the quadro, but I am looking to build a workstation for 3DS and Revit right now, and all the research I did led me to the Quadro 2000. I would also like to hear some input from anyone who has experience with these cards.

Nvidia have a pretty good track record and come highly recommended but I am no authority on MAX rendering.
Before you go down that investment road be aware that outsourcing high end rendering to a cloud / rendering farm seems to be turning out top notch results. In some cases better than what 'we' can produce and . . . . faster.

I've looked into Reality Server (cloud option) and found that its just plain goofy. They can only take exported CAD (3D of course) files or something like that. and they can only be a certain size in MB's. So until adding a 90MB revit or 3dsMax file becomes a viable option, I'll have to stick to my own machine. They speed at which they render is absolutely amazing, results are....well....good to great, but not outstanding. Also on subscription and noticed that Revit Cloud Render is not exactly great either. there's a ton of materials, lighting, etc... it can't do yet.
But back to my original question. I'm not looking at a quadro 2000, i'm looking at a Quadro PLEX 2200. or a cubix, or netstor na211a, or a dell c410x, or whatever else is out there that will let me daisy-chain a storm-load of nvidia tesla c2050's together.
