When I duplicate a material in the material browser, any changes I make to the duplicate also changes in the original. How do I make a duplicate material that I can edit independently?

This is the process I'm following...

I'm in the Material Browser: In Document Materials: all

Right click on the material and choose duplicate

Click on the copy of the material and choose edit

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

I had the same problem if you keep playing with it eventually youll get it. but i hate the new materials browser so the easiest way ive found is to a new material from scratch. can find the option in the bottom left corner of the browser.

did you give the duplicate a different name as well?

so that any changes only apply to the duplicate and not the original?

I am having the Same porblem..did you find a solution?  The old duplicate didn't have this issue.  I am duplicating a complicated material and would rather not create from scratch.  Thanks for your help in advance.

Thanks for your responses.

To clarify - even when I give the duplicate a new name, any changes I make to it (tint, shade, image) are all changed in the original.

What material are you trying to duplicate. have you tried using a different asset?

I encounter the same problem for any of the materials I try to duplicate. I am generally taking a default material that comes with the program, and trying to duplicate it to create a new material.

maybe that is the issue, trying to modify the default.

try another non default material , and see if that works.

(maybe default is a non changeable system material)

This happens with every material in the Revit material library. I don't have any other materials, so how I've been making new materials is basing it on an existing material and importing my own images etc. Even when I make a duplicate of ones that I have modified, the same problem happens. So is the only one to make an independent material to start from scratch each time?

None of that post descibes the issue of 2013-every material that you duplicate is linked to the original and each change is reflected in all duplicates and orginal materials.  In 2012, you could duplicate by hitting a "button" and there was no issue of the new material being linked to the original.  For some reason the 2013 version has "updated" and is not fully customizable, because you can only have many copies of the same thing...which is not helpful.  The only way that I have to work around this is to take other similar pre-set materials and change them to be what I need.  But this limits my material library and is not preferable.

There has to be a way to do this.  Why would a newer version be crapier...

I guess the way to duplicate a material in 2013 is to avoid the duplicate button! It seems like I can get around this by first creating a new material, then in the assets section choosing Add Asset - Appearance/Physical/Thermal and choosing the material I'd like to copy. It brings in all the information from the other material - without overriding it!

PROBLEM SOLVED!!

If you want to make changes in a duplicate material and not have those same changes made to the original material, here is the process:

Make a duplicate. When you edit the duplicate material you have to ALSO duplicate the asset that you want to change (right click asset and select duplicate.) The asset then becomes a duplicate and will not change the original material!

There's no sound in this video, but you can see the step by step process in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSfFlOmfZbg
