...comes in not transparent. Same with png's.  Do jpegs even support transparencies?  What am I doing wrong?

There have been several post on using jpg's for stained glass windows and backlit sighs.  Search for those and see what they found out.  I don't think Revit supports transpared jpeg backgrounds.

It doesn't support transparent tif's and png's either.  This is photoshop 101 image manipulation.  Why not?

"It doesn't support transparent tif's and png's either." - Not true, revit can use PNG files (not jpeg) to be transparent, like WW said you can find several threads about this issue in the forum.

Do you have a link?  I did a search for "stained glass" and got nothing that applied to my problem.

I have a png file where the background has been changed to transparent.  I have inserted it as a decal onto a gym floor.  When I render, the transparent background is lost and the image renders with the color background that was made transparent in the png.  The png file inserts into Word just fine and the transparent background stays transparent.  Not so in Revit when rendered.

This is not the "MentalRay won't let you insert background images in rendering like Accurender did" problem.  It may be related, but the two links you gave me don't address my situation.

My reseller tech guy says that Mental Ray will not support transparencies at all.  He gave me a work around.  He said to create a negative image of the art that I want inserted.  Insert the original image in the decal.  Go to the bottom of the decal properties page and click on cutout.  Select the negative image for the cutout.  When you render that decal, the background in the image has been cut away.  It works.
