I'm working in Revit Arch 2012 and MEP 2012 and I place in some family objects and I can see the walls behind them showing through.

I cannot figure out how to stop it.  Visual style is set to Hidden Lines.  I've attached a photo of what's happening.  See how the ceiling patter and wall pattern, and window frames are clearly visible through the light fixtures and LCD monitors??

Anybody know how to fix this or what's going on?  Thanks!!!

Either you have some object over-rides or more likely category VG settings that make these objects transparent.

I checked Visibility/Graphics overrides for that floor plan view and for that 3D view and nothing is checked as transparent.

What I am doing is, linking in an architectural revit model into another revit file and adding these devices to the newly created revit file.  the walls, floor, ceiling, casework, etc are all in the background/linked in file.  That's the only common factor I see, all the lines in the background/linked file are showing through objects that I place in the new file.  Any way to fix that?

If this is a model view and the linked files are model - not linked by view, then everything should work just right.

You have something set.  Do you have a phase filter and graphic over-rides in that?

No, certainly no phase filters (dont know what that is).  I'm pretty new to Revit.  I was given the Revit architecural file by an architect. I then created a new file in Revit MEP and linked in the architectural file as a background.  then imported the floor plan views from the architectural file so that my MEP floor plan views would match that.  then I started inserting our devices (cameras, intercom stations, card readers, LCD monitors, etc).  I wanted to see how our control rooms would look with these new items in it so I did a 3d camera view of that control room and thats what it looks like.  I havent changed anything really, just all default/stock setup.

As stated before, I'm pretty new to revit, I have taken a few training seminars and built some family objects, thats about it.  I have been doing CAD and parametric modeling in Mechanical desktop, Pro/E, and now Inventor for over 20 years.  I guess I know just enough about revit to be dangerous.  It sure is different from any CAD or parametric modeling software I've ever used (I think it really sucks!  lol).

Not sure what you are doing.  If you linked in the architectural file, there is no need to import anything else from the architect.  It is already there!  Your MEP plans should show the architects model elements all in the proper place and the architects file is not a "background".  You can set filters to ghost the architects model elements if you want your MEP items to stand out.

Hang in there - I did 3D CAD for over 20 years before learning Revitand it's far better than anything in CAD.

Hi,

This type of problem is usually graphic related. Go to Options > Graphics tab - see if you have any warnings related to your graphics card. Try turning off Hardware Accelleration, then restart Revit to see if the problem goes away.

Sometimes these issues can be fixed by updating your graphics card driver or by turning off hardware accelleration.

I hope that helps!

Look at your window property dialog, check discipline. If you change this setting you should see some different looks, think you are set for MEP, try Architectural.

WWHub is right don't get discouraged, it will take awhile to get be comfortable with this program.

Thanks for all of your suggestions.  Steve was correct.  Once I found the window properties dialog (took some hunting around), it was set for electrical.  When I changed it to Architectural it looked the proper way.

Thanks again!  I'm sure I'll be back with more questions as we start using this product more.  Luckily, as a firm, we were kind of left alone and allowed to use CAD for a long time because our engineering discipline doesnt exactly fit into what MEP does.  We design security electronics for justice facilities and most of our drawings are just 2D symbols and annotations, not much for us to put into the 3D world.  But now we're being dragged/forced into using Revit and it just seems so counter-intuitive of everything we've done in the past.  And like i say, 80% of our drawings are just symbols and annotations laid on top of a floor plan, these symbols dont represent anything that we cand insert into the model, so a lot of what we're doing is just 2D drafting inside of Revit which, as you know, its not designed for.  Very frustrating.
