I'm trying to create a schedule that picks up tagged objects. Those objects are nothing more than 2d linework with solid fill. These are column symbols within walls which is why I didn't use the 3d structural columns (they will never be seen). I found that schedules do not pick up Filled Regions & Detail Components which led me to creating a Structural Column Family.

There were two problems with this: First, I didn't have access to the Fill Region tool that is totally necessary in defining the geometric shape within a wall assembly; Second, when I place the component in the project, it doesn't appear as though it's invisible. I would like to avoid creating a model of this and stick to Symbolic Linework if possible as I've done, but I'm getting the impression that there has to be length, width, "and" depth/height for it to be visible in plan view. I can imagine other useful symbolic 2d representations as well but, again, I'm not sure how this is going to play out.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Bill

You can schedule 2D items just like 3D.   We do a lot of 2D furniture families for hotels and we add shared parameters to them for our scheduling.  We also use families that only have invisible lines and shared parameters so that they too can be scheduled.

Could you give me directions on how you did this?

  • What I have done is create a Detail Item family. It includes a rectangle with a filled region. They have width and length labels for several Types. Under Family Categories and Parameters, I checked the Shared box.
  • I also created a Shared Parameter named "Connection", Discipline = Common, Type of Parameter = Family Type: Detail Items.
  • Within my project under the Fields tab of the schedule, I added the parameter "Connection". It was grouped under Other, and the "Add to all elements in the selected categories" was checked; Detail Items is the category it's under.

It shows up in the schedule but doesn't report the value entered in the family. Basically, I have 2d columns (black rectangles) showing in the floor plan where structural loads are to be placed, and I want their attributes in the schedule. They are from the same family but have several types - 3 1/2 x 3 1/2, 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 and so on. Each would show this description along with several other Type, Instance, or Text columns (filled in as needed).

One thing I just noticed was the Schedule was under Structural Columns which, in turn, aloowed me to choose Detail Items. But, I was trying to create a Detail Item family, so I didn't have to use 3d columns for my schedule. Details Items category is not available for this. So, how do you schedule these items?

A shared family setting is very different than a shared parameter.  From your HELP:

"Shared parameters are parameters that you can add to families or projects and then share with other families and projects. They give you the ability to add specific data that is not already predefined in the family file or the project template.

Shared parameters are particularly useful when you want to create a schedule that displays various family categories; without a shared parameter, you cannot do this. If you create a shared parameter and add it to the desired family categories, you can then create a schedule with these categories. This is called creating a multi-category schedule in Revit Architecture.

Shared parameters are stored in a file independent of any family file or Revit Architecture project; this allows you to access the file from different families or projects."

Shared parameters are special.  The parameter name is just a name.  The parameter must come from the same shared parameter so this is why they schedule but don't match what is in the family.

I suggest you download the "families guide" from the autodesk site to learn about parameters.
